Originally intended to be a large 44 gun ship, her design was modified by Josiah  Fox to a 38 gun frigate.  In 1813, under the command of James Lawrence, she went into action with the Shannon 38, probably the best trained frigate in the British navy.  The fight only lasted for 12  minutes but was one of the most hard fought of the war.  The Chesapeake hit the Shannon over 300 times and received over 500 hits before she surrendered.
