The large 44 gun frigates of the Constitution class were conceived in 1794 and represented a radical departure from the normal size of frigate being very similar to the  German pocket battle ship in that they could out-gun most frigates and out-run the more powerful ships of line.  Designed by Joshua Humphreys and Josiah Fox, the Constitution was launched in 1797. Active in the 1812 war, Constitution began the run of American successes in August by capturing the Guerriere 38 followed in December with Java 38.
