HMS Victory was designed by Sir Thomas Slade in 1759 and laid down in the old No 2 dock at Chatham and launched in 1765. She proved to be a fast ship for her rate and became a popular flag ship being spared from becoming a prison hulk in later years. She was repaired between 1799 – 1803 for Nelson and became the flag ship at Trafalgar. The model as made shows Victory after her 1803 refit with the solid forecastle bulwarks and modifications to her stern, as she was at Trafalgar.
